Electric Bike FAQ

Common questions about buying, riding, and maintaining electric bikes in San Diego.

Do I need a license to ride an electric bike in California?

No license, registration, or insurance is required to ride a Class 1 or Class 2 eBike in California. Class 3 eBikes (up to 28 mph) require riders to be at least 16 years old and wear a helmet. All three classes are legal on bike paths, bike lanes, and public roads where traditional bicycles are permitted.

What is the difference between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bikes?

Class 1: Pedal assist only, motor cuts off at 20 mph.
Class 2: Throttle + pedal assist, motor cuts off at 20 mph.
Class 3: Pedal assist up to 28 mph, best for commuting and longer distances.

How far can an electric bike go on one charge?

Most mid-range eBikes deliver 25–50 miles per charge. Long-range models can reach 80–100 miles. For San Diego coastal riding on flat terrain, most eBikes will comfortably handle a full day of exploring on a single charge. Range varies based on rider weight, terrain, wind, and assist level.

How fast do electric bikes go?

Class 1 and Class 2 eBikes provide motor assist up to 20 mph. Class 3 eBikes assist up to 28 mph. eMOTO-style bikes like Surron, EBOX, and GhostCat can travel faster in off-road settings. The motor disengages at the class limit — you can always pedal faster under your own power.

Can I ride an eBike on the San Diego beach boardwalk?

Class 1 eBikes are generally permitted on the Ocean Beach, Mission Beach, and Pacific Beach boardwalks under the same rules as regular bicycles. Class 2 and Class 3 eBikes may be restricted on certain paths. Always check current local ordinances and ride courteously around pedestrians.

Do you offer electric bike test rides?

Yes — no appointment needed. Stop by our Ocean Beach showroom at 1926 Bacon St, San Diego (Thursday–Tuesday, 10AM–6PM) and ask to ride any model on the floor. Our team will set you up and help you compare models side by side.

Do you service eBike brands you don't sell?

Yes. Our certified technicians service all major eBike brands regardless of where you purchased them. We handle battery diagnostics, motor repairs, brake adjustments, flat tires, tune-ups, and more. Call (619) 848-7420 to schedule a service appointment.

What is the difference between an eBike and an eMOTO?

A traditional eBike looks and rides like a bicycle with pedal assist. An eMOTO is styled like a dirt bike or pit bike — throttle-driven, with knobby tires and aggressive suspension. Brands like Surron, EBOX, and GhostCat make eMOTOs popular for trail riding and off-road recreation.

How long does it take to charge an electric bike battery?

Most eBike batteries charge in 3–6 hours using the included standard charger. Fast chargers can cut that to 2–3 hours. For battery longevity, keep the charge between 20% and 80% — this extends the overall battery lifespan.

Do you offer financing on electric bikes?

Yes, financing is available for qualifying purchases. Ask our team in-store or call (619) 848-7420 for current terms.
